Abstract

Environmental degradation remains a persistent challenge in Southwest Nigeria, with Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs contributing significantly through poor waste management and inefficient use of water resources. Despite growing advocacy for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), empirical evidence on how specific CSR initiatives influence environmental protection among SMEs in the region remains limited and inconclusive. The study examined the effect of CSR initiatives, specifically waste management practice and water conservation programme, on environmental protection among SMEs in Southwest Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey research design was adopted. Data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to 400 SME owners and managers across the six states in Southwest Nigeria. A total of 380 valid responses were retrieved, representing a 95% response rate. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis were employed to analyze the data using SPSS. The results from the study revealed that both waste management practices and water conservation programme have positive and statistically significant effects on environmental protection. Waste management practices showed a significant positive influence on environmental protection, while water conservation programme emerged as the strongest predictor. The model demonstrated a good explanatory power, indicating that CSR initiatives significantly contribute to improved environmental protection outcomes among SMEs in the region. The study concluded that CSR initiatives, particularly waste management and water conservation programme, play a critical role in enhancing environmental protection among SMEs in Southwest Nigeria. SMEs that integrate these practices into their operations are more likely to reduce environmental degradation and promote sustainability. The study recommended that SME operators should strengthen their waste management systems through recycling and proper disposal practices. Additionally, SMEs should prioritize water conservation initiatives, such as efficient water use and wastewater recycling, to enhance environmental sustainability.
